Palu, C. Sulawesi, Oct 22 (Antara) - Korea`s Search and Rescue Team has helped in looking for the bodies of missing people in Palu after earthquake and tsunami hit Central Sulawesi late September, 2018.

Thousands of people are believed to be missing mainly in the towns of Baleroa and Petobo, where rivers of soil swept away entire neighborhoods in the aftermath of the 7.4 on the Richter scale magnitude earthquake and tsunami on September 28.

The Korean team of 11 rescue workers evacuated bodies and looked for possible bodies buried under the ruins of falling buildings including the restaurant of Dunia Baru not far from the Malla Ramayana Tatura mall which also collapsed into a heap of ruins.

Andi, a son of the owner of the restaurant , said there were many customers at the restaurants when the quake struck toppling the building.

The official search for casualties of a devastating earthquake and tsunami began winding down , as authorities prioritize support for the survivors .

At least 2,000 people have been confirmed dead and more others are believed to be missing.

Authorities said there is almost no chance of finding anyone alive, and any bodies unearthed will likely be decayed beyond identification. Public health is also a concern, as bodies entombed under mud and debris could carry disease.

Official efforts will shift focus to providing for more than 80,000 people displaced and at least 10,000 injured by the disaster. The city of Palu was hardest hit by the quake, tsunami and a phenomenon called liquefaction, whereby underground water and silt were churned into mud that swallowed entire settlements.
