Bandung, W Java (ANTARA) - Energy and Mineral Resources Minister Ignasius Jonan has outlined an ambitious target to achieve a milestone in the power sector, with 100 percent electrification in Indonesia by 2020.

"Until August, (the electrification ratio) had reached 98.9 percent completion. With a monthly increase of some 0.1 percent, the target of 100 percent can be achieved by 2020," Jonan remarked after attending the 62nd anniversary of Padjajaran University here on Wednesday.

The minister affirmed that the electrification ratio was projected to reach 99.3 percent completion by 2019-end.

Jonan pointed to the fact that some 500 thousand households applied for new power connections annually.

Speaking in connection with the possibility of lowering electricity tariff following the decline in the price of coal and gas, Jonan could not as yet confirm it though added that the price would not hike, with the rupiah currently standing at Rp14,000 against the US dollar.

"We are targeting affordable electricity and fuel oil for all citizens," Jonan stated.

The government has earlier established a target for Indonesia’s electrification ratio at 99.9 percent in 2019, with higher contribution of renewable energy.

The Energy and Mineral Resources Ministry’s data showed that in the past eight years, electrification ratio has increased, from 67.2 percent to 98.05 percent, with electricity still generated mainly with fossil energy.

The energy mix is yet dominated by fossil energy with coal constituting 58.64 percent; gas, 22.48 percent; oil, 6.18 percent; and renewable energy, some 12.71 percent.
