Palu, Central Sulawesi, (antarasulteng.com) - An exhibition to mark World Food Day was held in Palu, Central Sulawesi, on October 11-14, 2017, to draw public attention, local Food Security Agency Chief Abdullah Kawulusan remarked here on Friday.
Held at the Siranidi Sports Stadium, the World Food Day exhibition has been attracting a multitude of local people since it was opened by the governor of Central Sulawesi.
All districts and cities in Central Sulawesi are participating in the exhibition to showcase different types of non-rice food products and industrial processed products in the region.
Kawulusan said the exhibition to commemorate World Food Day is expected to offer huge benefits to the community and a broader understanding of the various types of food products in the 13 districts and cities in Central Sulawesi.
The Food and Agriculture Organization celebrates World Food Day every year on Oct 16 to commemorate the founding of the organization in 1945.
Events are organized in several countries across the world, making it one of the most celebrated days of the United Nations calendar.
These events promote worldwide awareness and action for those suffering from hunger and for the need to ensure food security and nutritious diets for all.
One of the biggest issues related to climate change is food security. The world`s poorest -- several of whom are farmers, fishermen, and pastoralists -- are being hit the hardest by the rising temperatures and an increase in frequency in weather-related disasters.
At the same time, the global population is growing steadily and is expected to reach 9.6 billion by 2050.
To meet such a high demand, agriculture and food systems will need to adapt to the adverse effects of climate change and become more resilient, productive, and sustainable.
This is the only way we can ensure the well-being of ecosystems and rural populations and reduce emissions.
Growing food in a sustainable manner means adopting practices that produce more with less in the same area of land and utilize natural resources wisely.
It also means reducing food losses before the final product or retail stage through several initiatives, including better harvesting, storage, packing, transport, infrastructure, market mechanisms, as well as institutional and legal frameworks.(skd)
